The Importance of Information and Communication Technology in Language Teaching

According to Budi Sutedjo (2002:168) information is processing of data obtained from each element into a form easily to understand. In addition, information describes an event in the form of fact. Information technology has opened a new era of information for today’s organization (it might be business, non-profit, educational, research etc.) and has enabled it to gather and communicate information and thus function in a more effective way. According to Main (2008), communication technology can interpreted as the technology used to store, generate, process and disseminate information. So, according to (Hariyadi, 1993: 253, in Ardroni) the definition of information and communication technology is technology for procurement, processing, storage, and dissemination of information by utilizing various types of computers and telecommunications are born because of presence of strong impulses to create new technologies that can overcome the slowness of human information processing. In line with the development of information and communications technology, also developing approaches and methods of language teaching that involves the use of information and communication technology. Teachers, lecturers, practitioners and educational language other parties related to language education must inevitably open minded about information and communication technologies (Information and Communication Technology / ICT) and explore the various possible uses in classroom language learning so that teaching objectives can be achieved. It is an undeniable fact that most of students nowadays can enjoy having new technology either at homes or at schools. For this, it is quite possible for them to have ICT for learning language at homes or at school. The purpose of having this kind of method is that students will have many advantages, according to Kurniawati et,al (2005) by ICT students can get many advantages in the linguistic aspects and the content. For the linguistic aspects, firstly, they will learn the English sound system through spelling, secondly the grammar, by combining words into longer utterances, and finally the choice of words or vocabulary. While for the content, ICT let the students learn (assisted by the teacher) the variety of language used within a certain subject. Teaching technique using chalk and talk or explanation is not popular anymore. It is then suggested that the teacher uses internet within his teaching learning process and it is also compulsory for the students to learn to use it. The Internet is a must, because it can be used (1) as the source of knowledge (2) as an aid for learning (instructional aid) (3) as teaching or learning facility (4) as a standard of competency (5) as an administrative equipment (6) as a supporting equipment for the school management (7) as an educational infrastructure. Available including information technology and communication technology (ICT) utilization of ICT for education is the main English language learning, has become imperative that cannot be further delay. Various applications of ICT such as computers, telecommunications, audio, and video already available in the community and already ready waiting to be utilized optimal for use in education especially in language teaching. Without importance of information and communication technology, the process of language teaching cannot run smoothly, because it is the equipment for language teaching, for example we can teach about listening without the technology (audio/video) we can difficult to give the subject to students, students cannot hear the conversation. So that is why the information and communication technology is importance for language teaching.
